At GromKo. Voice, we are dedicated to improving the communication and quality of life for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and their loved ones. Through specialized therapy, including the evidence-based SPEAK OUT!® program, we empower individuals to regain their voice and enhance their confidence in communication. Sarah Gromko, M.S., CCC-SLP, the founder of GromKo. Voice, is certified and licensed in the SPEAK OUT!® program and has extensive experience working with individuals with Parkinson’s.
What is SPEAK OUT!
SPEAK OUT!® is a therapy program specifically designed for people with Parkinson’s disease. It focuses on strengthening the muscles used for speaking and swallowing by targeting the underlying motor challenges caused by Parkinson’s. Developed by the Parkinson Voice Project*, SPEAK OUT! helps individuals:
- Speak with intention and clarity.
- Improve vocal strength and endurance.
- Enhance overall communication abilities.
The program is structured, engaging, and proven to improve communication when practiced consistently.
How Can Parkinson’s Affect Communication?
Parkinson’s disease often impacts the ability to communicate due to changes in the voice and speech, including:
- Soft or Weak Voice: Speech may become quiet or lack strength, making it harder for others to hear.
- Monotone Speech: The natural variation in pitch and tone can diminish.
- Mumbled or Slurred Speech: Speech may become less clear due to changes in muscle control.
- Swallowing Difficulties: Challenges with swallowing (dysphagia) can impact eating and drinking safely.
These changes can be frustrating and isolating, but targeted therapy can make a significant difference.
